Currently, I am 19 years old, and studying Fine Art and English Literature at an Undergraduate level at Aberystwyth University.
I am an intuitive and avid painter of nature. My aim when I paint a landscape is to completely and authentically capture my experience within the landscape. I want to express the atmosphere from a specific moment in time that exerts a fascinating and unique kind of beauty. I have an individual process which involves time-management, persistence and attention to detail. I constantly test myself to solve problems within my work as I make decisions about my drawings, colour choices and compositions.
As an English Literature student, I very much enjoy writing poetry and reading literature. My ideal place to sit down and read is at a coffee shop during closing-time during the winter. I love reading Greek plays, Shakespeare, Vintage Sci-Fi and mysteries, contemporary literature and Gothic and Romantic poetry. Some of my favourite books of all time are, The Oresteia by Aeschylus, King Lear by Shakespeare, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, and Emily Dickinson’s poetry.
My aim for my landscape paintings is to completely and authentically capture my experience within the landscape. I want to express the atmosphere from a specific time frame and how I personally connect and reflect upon this. Nature fascinates me, I love the variation of atmospheres when I cycle alone through the Welsh valleys, from stormy icy winds to a beaming hot cloudless day.
My process begins with planning a cycle route. I find this method of exploring the landscape incredibly enlightening and enjoyable; it means that I can take in the beautiful scenery wholly, without distractions. By mentally and physically challenging myself to visit lush scenic landscapes, my experience too and from the compositions I create is a journey.
My recent paintings explore colour, the lushness and sublime elements of natures structures. Most of my compositions come from the valleys of Ceredigion, from Devil’s Bridge to Caidar Idris. In my physical application, I paint emotionally, varying from minimalist to semi-abstract. But, most of all, I want to convey the beauty I see in the landscape. Since beauty is so subjective, I attempt to find many different kinds of nature to paint, and I cannot desert the possibility to find more unique, sublime natural structures.
