A Note on I Am Legend by Richard Matherson

I have been so excited to read some Matherson, even more so after I read Stephen King’s afterword in my edition of I Am Legend, it was one of the most interesting horror/science fiction novels I’ve read. And just like King said in the afterword, I didn’t want I Am Legend to end.

Although Mathersons’ original novel has a film adaptation starring Will Smith, both are entertaining. However, the individuality of the original novel stands tall for me in a competition of which is ‘better’. I love the scientific exploration and found it very refreshing for a horror/science fiction novel. Conventionally, these genres have loose scientific principles and the author sometimes needs the reader to just accept those improbabilities. Despite the somewhat unusual approach to investigating vampires scientifically, I did not feel these technicalities were bewildering. This novel reads so well and it’s a great classic to start with.
