Every Heart A Doorway & Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

This book series was the biggest surprise of the year so far for me. I had only heard good things about this series and that it gets better and better. I had low expectations for these because I’ve found that in the past is that books are so often overhyped. These were so good. So much was packed into such a short amount of time. The world building, the diverse characters and the unique world that crosses the genre boundaries of fantasy and thriller.

I listened to the audiobooks for Every Heart A Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones, and I would definitely recommend listening to these. Since the author reads these I felt like her understanding of the world she created adds another level of detail to your reading experience.

The most surprising factor about these two books in the Wayward Children series was the cross-over between the middle-grade genre and the YA/Adult genre. It really gave off Harry Potter vibes in that sense.

The only thing that brought my rating of my Goodreads down from a 5-star to a 4-star was the fact that I guessed the “twist” in the first book in the series. I really wanted to give the first book a 5-star but unfortunately, I couldn’t. With that being said, I still really enjoyed the cause and effects elements of the twist. The fact that I guessed “it” didn’t spoil my reading experience too much.

I really enjoyed the first book in the Wayward Children series, however contrary to popular opinion, I found that the second book in the series was not as enjoyable as the first. I found that the retreat back into the timeline was okay, but I personally wanted to find more out about Nancy and her journey rather than Jacqueline and Gillian. Despite that, I really can’t wait to continue reading the series and I’m really happy to have found a new book series I’m actually excited about! I will review Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children #3) soon!
