Hello lovely people! The past few weeks I’ve accumulated a lot more books, so I bought a new bookshelf! Since I have recently been doing a lot of decluttering in my bedroom I decided my shelves needed a clear out too! This was so satisfying to do. Just for reference, if anyone (who lives near me) wants any of these books, feel free to message me!
So for this Book Un-haul, I wanted to follow the popular tag on YouTube! The prompts are :
- A book you ranked low
- A book you changed your mind about
- A series you won’t be completing
- A book you DNF’d
- A book you have multiple copies of
- A book you’ll never actually get round to
- A book you bought because of the hype
- A book you bought because of the cover
- A book you know nothing about
- A book I didn’t buy
I’m going to take these with a pinch of salt but I’m so happy to be clearing more space on my bookshelves for books I love!
So to start with the first prompt, un-haul a book you ranked low. For this prompt, I chose The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson. As someone who absolutely adored the Mistborn Trilogy and Brandon Sanderson in general, I was a bit disappointed with The Alloy of Law. It isn’t a bad read but I personally didn’t love it enough to justify having it on my shelves.
For the third prompt (because I haven’t really changed my mind about any of these) are books that I have DNF’d, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff and Winger by Andrew Smith. Both of these are Y.A, one of which I bought over four years ago. Andrew Smith’s Grasshopper Jungle was amazing so I decided to pick up another one of his novels that Booktuber’s were raving about. I couldn’t get into Winger, unfortunately. I’ve attempted to read it three times and just can’t get into the whole high-school-underdog being bullied vibe, and I certainly am not buying the next in the series (or duology) whatever it is. The second book I am un-hauling is Illuminae, and ahhh this book is so hyped about, so I guess it falls under the book I bought because of the hype as well but I could not get into it. Frankly, I found the discourse incredibly irritating. I felt like it was trying to hard to be unique and I just didn’t have fun attempting to read it. I found the characters flat and 2-D and honestly don’t remember what little I read of it. For those reasons, Illuminae and Winger are being donated/sold/etc.
For the next prompt are books I have multiple copies of! This is a weird one for me, If I end up loving a book and have bought a really ugly (yes I am a book cover snob) second-hand copy for 99p from Oxfam (which is my fave btw) I like the cover to do the amazing story justice! As was the case for Othello and Homer, however, for my copy of The Portable Edgar Allan Poe the key was in the word ‘portable’. I have a gorgeous copy I received as a birthday gift at home and was not willing to take a huge hardback edition into class and destroy it with notes and page markers! For those reasons, these are heading back to the charity shops, well used.
The next lot of books I am getting rid of is a collection of books I either didn’t read, read and will never EVER pick up again or I didn’t like them. Andrew Marvell’s poems were okay, and I wrote an essay on them but they didn’t really hit my core. I liked some of the topics he discussed but I can’t justify having his poetry on my shelves because I will never pick it up ever again. I feel the same way about Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Not only was this impossible (well, nearly) to read I was so sad I found it boring. Before university, I was so excited to read medieval literature but I have discovered Renaissance literature is as far as my brain is interested in. Finally, I am disposing of Yeats’ poetry collection, I never actually read much of it but I think another person would absolutely adore it.
The final prompt I will be using for my un-haul is a book I know nothing about, so I chose Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe. I went to the lecture for this book in my university module and still can’t remember anything about it?? In addition, I never see myself reaching for this book which Is why I am donating it!
Thank you so much for reading this blog post, and I hope you guys are inspired to clear out your bookshelves. Let me know if you want any of the books I mentioned besides The Odyssey and Sir Gawain and The Green Knight.
After all of that, I rearranged my bookshelves and they now look beautiful! Again, thank you so much for reading and I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙂
