As a fan of Blade Runner, I was really excited to read Phillip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I thought his novel would be in the running for one of my favourites of the year, however, I was a little disappointed. That’s not to say that this was a terrible read. Unfortunately, though, it was a surprisingly slow read despite the fact that it’s a thriller. It’s that nothing happened, I just found Phillip K. Dick’s writing a bit tedious. This was the sort of book where I liked the ideas discussed but didn’t really enjoy the overall story…which rather weird really, considering I gave it 3/5 stars on my Goodreads.
To compare my experience with this novel to another, I enjoyed it about as much as Naomi Alderman’s The Power. I liked it, it wasn’t mind-blowing, but the ideas were more interesting than actually reading for pleasure. Having said that, I did think about this book for a few days – it was lingering in the back of my mind, occasionally popping in and saying ‘hello!’
Overall, I did enjoy Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and that there were some amazing scenes from the book that were discarded from the movie. I wouldn’t recommend this as a first read for someone who is new to science fiction, however, if you’ve somehow avoided anything to do with Blade Runner I think you may enjoy this!
