Mythos by Stephen Fry

Mythos is one of my favourite books I’ve read so far this year – it is a compilation of Greek Myths selected by Stephen Fry. Fry’s way of writing is positively hilarious, it’s such an entertaining read! Mythos made me laugh out loud so often, I was so excited to keep listening/reading but I didn’t want it to end.

For this book, it would be a sin if I didn’t recommend the Audible audiobook! Not only is Fry’s writing engaging and interesting, but having him read these famous Greek tales to me is an amazing reading experience. He puts on voices for certain characters, really bringing them to life. All in all, this is an excellent read for anyone interest in a surprisingly light read of Greek Mythology.

Reading more about Greek Myths has meant that I can see the inspiration in so many pieces of literature from these ancient myths. For example, when I read Carol Ann Duffy’s The World’s Wife poetry collection it’s so interesting to see where some of those stories came from, and how Duffy has turned the stories on their head, subverting gender expectations and compulsory heterosexuality.

Overall this is an amazing read, regardless of your knowledge of Greek myth or literature. It’s enjoyable, an absolute delight to read and I couldn’t recommend it more!
