Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

So beautiful. Such a bittersweet, eye-opening and poetic novel. I can’t imagine how amazing it would have been to read this when it came out in the 80s.

The first thing I’d like to talk about was how engaging and interesting the writing style was. Jeanette Winterson expresses so much one sentence. A twist and another turn can happen in a paragraph without feeling bewildered. If you’re an upcoming writer or write for a hobby, this is certainly one to look at.

The story was really eye-opening, particularly because I have never been in a position where I’ve had a religion or social norms forced upon me. It was so interesting to read from a child’s perspective and watch them grow up. This book had me jaw-dropped at moment, on the verge of crying… I couldn’t stop reading! It’s such a short, fast-paced read you could probably read it in a sitting, although, I’d advise reading it in little parts because it’s just so good.

If you’re an English literature student, you should definitely read this. If you’re interested in LGBTQ+ reads or poetic writing, it’s great. Really enjoyed this one, let me know what you thought and thanks for reading!
