I was sceptical going into this book because of the huge hype around it. Honestly, it deserves the hype it’s getting. So much so that I hear there’s a film in production. This is a book like Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda that I think everyone should read. It won Goodreads Young Adult book of the year 2017, and was on the New York Times bestseller lists, amazing considering The Hate U Give is Angie Thomas’ debut novel! Not only is it an achievement to be rewarded, but for her writing to open up people’s minds in such a positive way.
Thomas’ novel has heavy themes of police brutality and violence but addresses them in a careful manner. There are many parts of the book that made me uncomfortable, which in this case, is a good thing. Her novel has taught me more about culture in such an inspiring way. Her novel has made me upset because people still have to face racism in their everyday lives. A really enlightening read. Couldn’t recommend it more.
